This dictionary has been specially written for secondary school students aged 11-16 years. It should serve as a working tool in the classroom and accustom its users to the style in which most adult dictionaries are written, but at the same time be easy to use because it avoids abbreviations and similar conventions. Inflections of all verbs and plurals of nouns are spelt out in full, and comparatives and superlatives of many adjectives and adverbs are also given. Pronunciation of difficult words is given in a simple lookand- say system without special symbols. Definitions are clearly expressed, with careful explanations of difficult concepts (e.g. hindsight, hypothesis, irony), and many examples of words in use are provided.
