Most of the changes in this revision of The Bare Essentials, Form A are responses to suggestions from our colleagues across Canada who are using The Bare Essentials in their classrooms. We are grateful for their ideas, comments, and support. In addition to many new and updated exercises, we have added a chapter on sentence combining to test and reinforce the beginning writer’s mastery of sentence structure. We have simplified the explanation of the apostrophe in possessive constructions, and we have moved that chapter to the unit on punctuation. Those who are familiar with the original Forms A and B should note that the chapters in this revision have been renumbered in consequence of these changes. We have also rewritten the chapter “Revising the Paper,” emphasizing the importance of audience and structure as well as technical correctness. Two of the readings are new; one is an essay written in class by a first-term student. And finally, in response to continuing requests from the grammatically faithful, we have included a glossary. Students wishing to know the definitions of grammatical terms used in the text — as always, we have kept these to a minimum — can find both definitions and examples in the List of Grammatical Terms at the back of the book.
