My love of books is an integral part of my work with young children in classrooms. My firm belief in both literature and children is deeply rooted in the past, beginning in my early childhood years, and continuing to my experiences as an adult. I would like to thank each of the following people for helping to shape my thinking on literacy, teaching, and learning: My mother and father, who introduced literature into my life. As a child, my earliest memories are of my father reading to me each night at bedtime. The combination of love and undivided attention, along with a sense of freedom and choice (so rare at age three, at least from the child's point of view) mixed together to form an indelible image in my mind. In those read-aloud sessions, I learned the pleasures of story, and the routine of reading became a treasured part of the bedtime ritual. My sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Lee Gray, who nurtured young writers and listened with care and interest to the stories of children. From him I learned to love writing, reading, and teaching.
