Hindi is a beautiful language that is a joy both to learn and to speak. It is estimated to be the second or third most widely spoken language in the world. Hindi and its related dialects are spoken by an estimated 300 million people. One can find Hindi speakers not only in the North of India, but also in places such as Fiji, Mauritius, parts of the Middle East, and many other loca¬ tions around the globe. Hindi speakers also can communicate fairly weU in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, which is spoken in many parts of India. While Urdu is similar to Hindi, a far greater number of its words are Perso- Arabic in origin. Also, while Hindi is written in the Devanagari script and is read left to right, Urdu is written in a version of the Arabic script and is read right to left. While both languages are almost identical in their sentence structure and share a wealth of vocabulary, they reflect individual cultural traditions. These lan¬ guages tend to be separated by politics more than anything else. In reality, in many parts of North India such as Delhi, a combination of the two languages will be spoken, known as "Hindustani."
