There seems generally to be a gap between the really small pocket dictionaries and the medium-sized volumes, a gap not only in the number of entries but also in treatment. And it is in this question of treatment that a certain paradox lies. The smallest and cheapest dictionaries, which inevitably provide the least information about the words they contain, are generally bought by relative beginners in the language who in fact need more guidance, not less.
