Proper word division is one of the many problems generated by man's need to write. Closely related is the problem of spelling. Both issues, since writing is essentially an artificial development, depend upon adopted conventions and are not inherent in the spoken language itself. Until the invention of printing, there were no standardized rules for word division. Then the need for rapidly produced lines of type with set margins made a uniform system for dividing words imperative. Gutenberg, Caxton and their followers had no ready guides. They had to work out their own rules; conventional usages were established long before the first dictionaries were printed.
