What is slang? You are in a London pub and overhear this exchange between the barman and a customer: “There you go, squire” - “Cheers, mate”. That is slang: very informal words and phrases used normally only in speech between people of the same social class, age or work group. Very often the words are used with meanings quite different from the standard ones you may be familiar with - for example, the exchange above really means: “Here is your drink” - “Thank you”. Very often, of course, slang words exist only in slang and have no other meaning in the standard language. Nerd, naff and diddy, for example - if you want to know what they mean, look in this book because they will probably not be included in a normal dictionary.
