This book has been designed for the adult reader who wishes to improve his English, studying either alone or with a teacher. A poor ability to write or speak effectively is today probably the greatest single bar to advancement in any job, and socially it can lead to misunderstanding or loneliness. It is often much easier to make use of the first well-worn phrase that comes to mind than to search for the precise thought, with the exact words to describe it. Anyone who sets out to acquire a greater control over the language he speaks and writes will find it immeasurably rewarding; he will achieve positive and immediate communication with others which brings with it greater efficiency at work and a genuine self-confidence in all personal relations. Moreover, because words are so vital to thought, the thoughts themselves will inevitably become clearer and more incisive as skill with words increases. It will be easier to go unerringly to the essential point in any statement, however woolly its wrappings, and in turn transmit ideas to other people, with increasing authority and grace.
